THE CHALLENGE

Understand why cars use more fuel than expected

A passenger-transport company wanted to understand why its cars were using more fuel than expected. Drivers often waited in parked cars with the engine and air conditioning running. Driving habits also needed attention.

THE SOLUTION

Monitor fuel use and limit stationary A/C use

The company installed SMART S-2435 trackers to monitor fuel consumption, engine operation and vehicle movement.

Monitor fuel use and driving habits

This showed when cars were standing still with their engines running and how much fuel they used during those periods. Eco Driving records helped the company identify driving habits to discuss with drivers.

Apply the automatic A/C rule

An automatic A/C rule was configured using Complex Events: If a car remained stationary with its engine running and A/C on for five minutes, the tracker switched off the A/C through a relay. When the car started moving again, A/C operation was allowed. The rule worked automatically on the tracker. It switched off the air conditioning, not the engine.

Restrict unauthorized use of parked cars

A separate relay allowed the operator to immobilize parked cars when they were not authorized for use.

RESULTS

Less unnecessary A/C use and fuel consumption

The fleet owner reported two improvements across the 72-car fleet after introducing automatic A/C control and working with drivers on their driving habits.

30% less unnecessary A/C use

Reduced non-work-related air-conditioning use while drivers waited in parked cars with the engine running.

20% lower fuel consumption

Lower fuel consumption across the fleet after the combined changes to A/C control and driving practices. These figures were supplied by the fleet owner. Managers could review fuel use during long stops, while the automatic rule limited prolonged stationary A/C use.

WHY SMART S-2435

Apply the fuel-use policy across all 72 cars

S-2435 turned the company’s rule on prolonged stationary A/C use into an automatic action in each vehicle. The owner did not have to rely on repeated calls asking drivers to switch it off.

Fuel records then let the company review consumption alongside the control rule and driver coaching. Telematics supplied both a way to act on the identified source of waste and a way to review the combined result.
