THE CHALLENGE

Restrict unpaid use and review operating time

A generator rental company charged customers by the day and accepted online payments for rental extensions.

The owner needed to prevent continued use when a rental period expired without payment. The company also wanted to know how many hours each generator operated while deployed at a customer site.

THE SOLUTION

Link paid rental periods with equipment control

START S-2011 trackers connected the generators to the rental-management system. A connected relay controlled generator operation, while external supply voltage was used to determine engine-running periods and accumulate operating hours.

Apply the paid rental period

When a rental expired without a paid extension, the rental system automatically sent a blocking command to the tracker. After receiving it, S-2011 activated the connected relay and stopped the generator’s engine. The rental system checked payment status; the tracker carried out the command at the equipment.

Restore permission after payment

Once an online extension payment was confirmed, the system sent an unblocking command. The tracker released the relay restriction, allowing the customer to operate the generator again. Releasing the restriction restored permission to operate; it did not automatically restart the engine.

Record operating hours

The installation used external supply-voltage conditions as an indication that the engine was running. The tracker accumulated the time during which those configured conditions were met. These records helped the owner review generator usage and plan servicing. They represented voltage-based operating-hour estimates, rather than readings from the generator’s own hour meter. Daily rental charges remained separate from operating hours.

THE RESULT

Remote rental control and usage records

The company connected its online rental-extension process to equipment control. An unpaid extension triggered a blocking command, while confirmed payment allowed the restriction to be released remotely.

Staff did not need to visit a site solely to apply or remove the restriction. The owner also gained operating-hour records for reviewing usage across the 28 generators.

WHY START S-2011

Act on payment status at customer sites

START S-2011 gave the rental company a way to act on payment status while the generator was already at a customer site. The owner could restrict continued use after an unpaid rental period and restore permission once the extension was paid.

The same installation recorded operating time using the available supply-voltage signal. For this project, the value was practical control over rental use and a basis for maintenance planning, without requiring staff to collect operating-hour readings in person.
