INDIA · EQUIPMENT RENTAL

Fuel Use and Power Output of Rental Generators

A diesel generator rental company in Haryana connected fuel measurements, electricity output and equipment location to understand how its generators were being used at customer sites and during transport.

THE CHALLENGE

Follow fuel use and equipment beyond the rental yard

The company’s generators regularly moved between customer sites. Once a unit left the rental yard, the owner had limited information about its location, fuel use and operation.

Knowing how much diesel had been delivered was not enough. The company needed to distinguish fuel consumed by the generator from unexplained changes in the tank and understand how much electricity that fuel produced.

The owner also needed to follow generators during relocation, including periods when their normal power supply was disconnected.

THE SOLUTION

Connect fuel use and electricity output

The company equipped 10 rental generators with SMART S-2433 trackers. SMART S-2433 brought together three complementary measurements: fuel remaining in the tank, fuel consumed during operation and electricity generated. Location records connected this operating information to the generator and its deployment site.

Check refuelling against changes in the tank

A Bluetooth fuel level sensor was installed in the generator’s tank. Its readings allowed the operator to review refuelling events and changes in the fuel remaining. Staff could compare recorded tank increases with fuel deliveries and investigate unexpected drops. This provided a basis for checking discrepancies instead of relying solely on information supplied from the customer site.

Compare fuel consumed with electricity produced

A fuel consumption meter and an electricity meter were connected through RS-485 using Modbus. Their readings allowed the operator to compare diesel consumed with electrical energy generated over the same period. Together, these measurements supported a practical fuel balance: opening tank volume plus refuelling, minus recorded consumption and documented fuel transfers, compared with the closing tank volume. A difference prompted investigation of the records, measurement conditions, possible leakage or unauthorised draining. It was not automatically treated as proof of theft. Electricity readings added context to fuel consumption. Comparing litres used per kilowatt-hour helped identify operating periods requiring attention, with generator load and operating conditions considered before drawing conclusions.

Locate generators and track transfers

S-2433 supplied location records so the rental company could check where each equipped generator was deployed and review its movements between sites. The installation used the device’s 800 mAh backup battery and a power-saving configuration to support tracking after external power was disconnected. This helped retain location information during transport. Update frequency and backup duration depended on the configured operating mode and conditions.

CUSTOMER-REPORTED OUTCOMES

Investigate rental fuel use

The owner could compare tank losses with recorded fuel consumption and examine fuel use against electricity output under similar loads.

Staff also used location records to coordinate the 10 units at customer sites and during relocation. Fuel discrepancies and equipment transfers could be followed up against a particular generator.

WHY SMART S-2433

Monitor generators during rentals

S-2433 let the rental owner check whether diesel leaving the tank was accounted for by recorded consumption and how that consumption related to electricity produced. This provided a reason for an inspection instead of accepting a falling tank level as normal use.

Location reporting also helped the company find units between rentals, including limited operation after external power was disconnected. The owner could coordinate the equipment and investigate its performance without being at the customer site.
