THE CHALLENGE
Check tools returned after a service visit
A telecom maintenance company sent technicians to mobile network sites with network testers, diagnostic kits and specialised tools.
Vehicle tracking showed where the vans travelled, but did not tell the company whether important equipment had returned with the technician after a visit. A forgotten tool could interrupt the next assignment and require a return journey.
The company also needed to identify the technician responsible for each vehicle and service visit.
THE SOLUTION
Warn about missing equipment and review stops
The installation covered six service vans. SMART S-2433 trackers were installed in the service vans, and BLE beacons were attached to selected high-value equipment. A Complex Events program was adapted to monitor multiple registered beacons and activate an in-cab buzzer when a configured missing-equipment condition was met. A 1-Wire RFID reader identified the registered technician. Ignition and rear cargo-door signals added context to vehicle stops and equipment access.
Prompt a check before the next job
The adapted program monitored the registered equipment tags. If an expected beacon was no longer detected under the configured conditions, the tracker activated the buzzer. The warning prompted the technician to check the equipment rather than discover a missing tester or tool case at the next assignment. Beacon detection indicated proximity to the vehicle; a missing signal prompted verification rather than automatically proving that an item had been lost.
Identify where to begin the search
Staff could review the missing-equipment event alongside the preceding service stop, cargo-door activity and registered technician. This helped determine whom to contact and which site to check first. The records supported investigation of where equipment might have been left; they did not continuously track an item once it was beyond the van’s reception range.
THE RESULT
Equipment checks during the service route
Technicians received an audible prompt when the configured checks identified missing equipment. The operations team could follow up using the relevant vehicle, technician and service-visit records.
This established an equipment-check process during the route, giving staff an opportunity to find an omitted item before it disrupted another job.
WHY SMART S-2433
Keep technicians equipped for the next job
S-2433 helped the company act on a possible equipment omission while the technician was still on the service route. The adapted Complex Events logic brought the issue directly to the cab, while the journey history gave the office a starting point for recovery.
For the maintenance company, the value was keeping technicians equipped to complete their assignments. Checking a missing item sooner could avoid a wasted return journey, a delayed repair or unnecessary replacement of equipment that could still be recovered.
