Pharmaceutical Temperature and Access Checks in Kenya

A pharmaceutical distributor connected vehicle location, refrigerated-compartment temperature and door activity to help dispatchers investigate delivery exceptions while vehicles were still on the road.

THE CHALLENGE

Investigate temperature and cargo-access exceptions during the journey

The company transported pharmaceutical products between its central warehouse in Nairobi, regional storage points and hospitals.

A door opening at a hospital could be part of an authorised handover. The same event at an unexpected roadside location required an explanation. Temperature deviations also needed attention during the journey, when staff could still contact the driver and investigate.

THE SOLUTION

Link temperature, door events and location

SMART S-4511 trackers were installed in 8 refrigerated vans. Bluetooth sensors measured temperature inside the cargo compartments, and door sensors connected to the tracker inputs recorded opening and closing events. The trackers transmitted these readings alongside GNSS location and trip records to the monitoring platform.

Follow the delivery and check cargo temperature

The dispatcher could view each van’s reported location and temperature readings during the route. The operator responsible for monitoring pharmaceutical deliveries reviewed temperature deviations and contacted the driver to check the refrigeration system and delivery circumstances. This supported investigation while the shipment was still in transit, rather than relying only on checks at the destination. The sensors measured temperature at their installed locations. Their readings supported investigation but did not, by themselves, establish the condition of every pharmaceutical product.

Review door openings in their delivery context

Door events were checked against the van’s location and the approved hospitals, warehouses and loading points. An opening at an expected delivery stop could be reviewed as part of the handover. An opening elsewhere prompted the dispatcher to check the circumstances with the driver.

Bring the evidence together

Location, temperature and door records formed a connected timeline for each delivery. Staff could examine whether a temperature change coincided with a door opening and where the vehicle was at that time. That context helped focus the investigation without automatically treating a door opening as unauthorised access or assuming it caused the temperature deviation. Reviews during the journey depended on updates reaching the platform.

CLIENT-REPORTED OUTCOMES

Follow up while shipments are in transit

The transport operator could review a temperature deviation and ask the driver to check the delivery conditions before the van returned.

Door and location context helped focus that request. The recorded history remained available for later review of the shipment.

WHY SMART S-4511

Check the shipment while it is still on the road

S-4511 made cargo conditions available to the person monitoring the delivery, so a temperature deviation could prompt contact with the driver before the van returned. Door and stop context helped that person request a relevant check.

The benefit was a response during the journey and a record for later review, rather than discovering an unexplained deviation only after handover.
