THE CHALLENGE
Investigate vehicle use with journey and fuel records
The fleet owner suspected that drivers were using company taxis for personal journeys. Fuel expenditure alone could not explain whether consumption came from authorised taxi work, unnecessary engine operation or trips outside assigned duties.
The operator needed journey records and fuel information together to investigate these concerns. It also wanted to address speeding and seat-belt use and give drivers and passengers a way to raise an alarm when they needed assistance.
THE SOLUTION
Link taxi trips, fuel and safety events
SMART S-2435 trackers connected vehicle movements, supported CAN data and driving events to the fleet monitoring system. The installation also included panic buttons for drivers and passengers.
Investigate journeys outside assigned work
Location and trip records gave the owner a basis for reviewing where vehicles travelled and when they were used. By checking these records against assigned work and operating hours, the owner could identify journeys requiring an explanation and follow up with the relevant driver. An unusual route became a specific event to investigate rather than an accusation based only on a high fuel bill.
Review fuel use in its operating context
The trackers collected fuel-level and fuel-consumption data through CAN. These readings helped the operator review tank-level changes, account for fuel used and compare consumption with recorded journeys. Air-conditioning status was also available through CAN, adding context when reviewing consumption. Its on/off state did not measure the air conditioner’s separate fuel use, but helped the owner consider operating conditions before attributing higher consumption to driver behaviour. Together, journey and fuel records made it easier to investigate unexplained consumption and discuss specific trips with drivers.
Address speeding and seat-belt use
The configured Eco-driving setup monitored driving behaviour and whether the driver’s seat belt was fastened. It also generated a warning when vehicle speed exceeded the project’s configured threshold of 70 km/h. These records gave the owner a basis for reviewing repeated unsafe behaviour and providing targeted feedback. The warning addressed excessive speed during operation, while subsequent review supported follow-up with drivers.
Provide a way to request assistance
Each of the 12 taxis had four panic buttons: one for the driver, one for the front passenger and two in the rear for passengers. A button activation provided an emergency signal that could be reviewed alongside the vehicle’s reported location. This gave the operator information for checking the situation and coordinating assistance.
CUSTOMER-REPORTED OUTCOMES
Review suspected trips and assistance requests
The owner could compare a suspected personal journey with assigned work and fuel records before following up with the driver.
Speed and seat-belt events supported specific coaching. Four panic buttons in each taxi let occupants request assistance with the vehicle’s reported location.
WHY SMART S-2435
Investigate suspected misuse by journey
S-2435 let the owner compare vehicle journeys and fuel use with assigned taxi work. A suspected personal trip could be discussed with its time and route, instead of remaining a general concern about the drivers.
Driving events supported individual feedback, and assistance requests could be associated with the taxi’s reported location. The installation gave the company a way to investigate misuse and respond to people in the vehicle.
