THE CHALLENGE
Distinguish passing through a street from operating the cleaning equipment
A municipal cleaning contractor could see where its sweepers travelled, but GPS alone could not show whether the cleaning equipment was operating.
Supervisors needed to distinguish a vehicle passing through a street from one using its brushes and water-spray system. They also needed to monitor cleaning-water availability and investigate hopper openings outside approved disposal locations.
THE SOLUTION
Link routes, cleaning, water and hopper events
The company equipped 6 compact street sweepers with START S-2011 trackers connected to ignition, brush/PTO, water-pump and hopper-door signals. A compatible water-level sensor was connected to the analog input.
Checking cleaning activity along the route
The monitoring system displayed vehicle movement alongside brush and water-pump activity. Supervisors could review a road section and check whether the cleaning equipment was switched on as the vehicle passed through. Sections covered without the expected equipment activity could be followed up with the driver. These records showed equipment operation along the route; they did not independently prove cleaning quality.
Planning water refills
Water-level readings showed how much water remained during a shift. Supervisors could arrange refills and check whether an early return coincided with an empty tank. Unexpectedly fast drops could also be reviewed against pump activity to decide whether the equipment or its water-use settings needed checking.
Reviewing hopper openings
The hopper-door signal recorded openings together with their time and location. If the hopper was opened away from an approved disposal point, staff could investigate the event. The signal identified an opening rather than confirming that waste had been discharged.
RESULTS
Investigate missed service and plan refills
Supervisors could follow up on assigned road sections without expected brush and water-system activity.
Water readings supported refill planning and checks on early returns. Hopper openings could be compared with approved disposal locations before asking the driver for an explanation.
WHY START S-2011
Check the cleaning activity behind the route
S-2011 helped the contractor distinguish a vehicle passing through a street from one operating its brushes and water system there. Supervisors could investigate road sections without expected activity and ask the crew about a possible missed service.
Water and hopper records also supported refill planning and checks on disposal locations. This made tracking useful for reviewing the cleaning work, rather than just the kilometres driven.
