THE CHALLENGE
Know what to check when cargo temperature rises
A frozen-food distributor supplied supermarkets and restaurants across Tbilisi. The company needed to monitor cargo temperature during deliveries and understand what to check when it rose.
A temperature alert alone could not show whether the rear door had remained open or the refrigeration unit had stopped. The dispatcher needed this context to give the driver a specific instruction while the delivery was still in progress.
THE SOLUTION
Link temperature warnings to delivery events
The installation covered 24 refrigerated vans. SMART S-2421 trackers connected vehicle location with readings from a Bluetooth temperature sensor in each refrigerated compartment.
Link equipment status to the driver
Three inputs recorded ignition, rear-door status and refrigeration-unit operation. A driver-identification reader connected through 1-Wire associated each route with the registered driver.
Turn a temperature alert into a specific check
The dispatcher could review temperature changes alongside door activity, refrigeration status and the vehicle’s stops. A prolonged door opening prompted a request to close the compartment. If the refrigeration unit was not running, the driver could check its operation. If temperature continued rising with the door closed and the unit running, the driver could be asked to inspect the cooling equipment. These signals helped narrow the investigation. A running-status signal alone did not confirm that the unit was cooling effectively.
Warn the driver during a prolonged deviation
An in-cab buzzer connected to a tracker output warned the driver when the measured temperature remained outside the configured range beyond the allowed delay. The warning prompted a check during the journey, while the platform records gave dispatch the context needed to follow up with the registered driver.
RESULTS
Follow temperature alerts with targeted checks
Dispatch could contact the registered driver with a check informed by door activity and refrigeration status, rather than only report that the compartment was too warm.
The in-cab warning drew attention to prolonged deviations, while the journey history supported later review. Temperature readings described the sensor location, not the condition of every product.
WHY SMART S-2421
Guide driver checks during deliveries
S-2421 helped the distributor respond to a temperature rise with a specific check: close a door, check whether the refrigeration unit is running, or inspect why cooling remains inadequate. Driver identification showed whom to contact.
The audible warning also brought a prolonged deviation to the driver’s attention. Telematics made the temperature record useful during the journey, while retaining the history for review after delivery.
