THE CHALLENGE
Move beyond an isolated temperature alert
The company transported food between a central cold-storage facility, supermarkets and regional distribution points.
Temperature monitoring could identify an excursion, but an alert alone did not explain what required attention. Staff needed to establish whether the refrigeration unit was operating, whether its temperature setting was appropriate or whether a door had remained open during unloading.
Without that context, the dispatcher had to contact the driver and reconstruct the situation before deciding what to check. The company needed temperature readings and equipment status connected to the same delivery record.
THE SOLUTION
Link temperature, controller and door records
The company equipped 9 refrigerated trucks with SMART S-4533 trackers, connecting cargo temperatures, refrigeration-controller data, door events and vehicle location in the monitoring platform.
Monitor conditions across the cargo compartment
Temperature sensors monitored different areas of the refrigerated compartment. Their readings provided a history of conditions at the monitored locations throughout the journey. The dispatcher could review temperature changes alongside the truck’s position and delivery stops, helping identify when and where an excursion developed.
Check what the refrigeration unit was doing
The refrigeration controller was connected through RS-485 using Modbus. The integration collected supported parameters, including operating status, set temperature, runtime and available alarm conditions. This gave staff information beyond the temperature inside the truck. They could check whether the unit reported that it was running, what temperature it was set to maintain and whether it had reported an abnormal condition. The available readings depended on the connected controller and its supported parameters.
Put door activity alongside temperature changes
Connected door sensors recorded opening and closing events during loading and unloading. When temperature moved outside the permitted range, the dispatcher could check whether the change coincided with a door opening, how long the door remained open and what the refrigeration unit reported during that period. These records helped distinguish circumstances requiring different responses. A prolonged door opening prompted a check with the driver; a controller alarm directed attention to the refrigeration equipment.
Respond with a specific check
Staff reviewed the combined records before contacting the driver. Instead of reporting only that the cargo compartment was too warm, they could ask the driver to check an open door, confirm the controller setting or investigate a reported alarm. The information helped narrow the investigation. It did not automatically establish the cause of every excursion or replace inspection of the equipment and affected goods.
CLIENT-REPORTED OUTCOMES
Target door, setting and alarm checks
Staff could review unloading activity and refrigeration reports before contacting the driver about a temperature deviation.
The combined history supported a targeted check during the journey and later review of the delivery, without automatically declaring a cause for the deviation.
WHY SMART S-4533
Guide checks after a temperature alert
S-4533 let the dispatcher examine what the refrigeration equipment reported when cargo temperature changed. That helped staff choose between checking an open door, a temperature setting or a reported equipment alarm before contacting the driver.
For the distributor, the value was a more informed response during delivery and a record for reviewing the handover. A temperature alert became the start of a targeted investigation.
