THE CHALLENGE
Understand waiting, unloading and maintenance needs
A mining contractor used tipper trucks to carry ore between loading areas, a crusher and a stockyard.
The company needed to know where trucks were waiting, where they unloaded and which vehicles needed maintenance. It also wanted to warn drivers if they started moving with the tipper body raised or the tailgate outside its expected position.
THE SOLUTION
Connect truck, tipper and tyre data
The installation covered six Volvo FMX500 tipper trucks. The company installed SMART S-4537 trackers to bring truck, tipper-body and tyre information into one monitoring system.
Understanding each trip
The tracker collected engine hours, RPM, available fuel data and fault information from the truck. A separate connection collected supported signals from the tipper controller, including hydraulic operation and tipping activity. Combined with location, these records helped staff see where a truck travelled, how long it stopped and when it operated the tipper body. This made it easier to investigate delays and check unloading activity.
Warning the driver
Switches monitored whether the tipper body was raised and whether the tailgate was in its closed position. If the truck began moving with either signal outside the configured condition, a buzzer warned the driver to stop and check. This provided an additional warning alongside the truck’s existing safety systems.
Checking tyres and engine condition
A tyre-monitoring system measured tyre pressure and temperature. Maintenance staff could review unusual readings together with engine faults and operating hours to decide which trucks needed inspection or servicing. Dual SIM provided an alternative network connection where coverage was available. A backup battery allowed reporting to continue for a limited time after external power was lost.
RESULTS
Investigate delays and target inspections
Supervisors could identify waiting periods and review tipping events before following up on a truck’s haul cycle.
Maintenance staff could select trucks for inspection from engine and tyre concerns, while drivers received configured body-position and tailgate warnings during operation.
WHY SMART S-4537
Know where a haul cycle needs attention
S-4537 helped the contractor examine the work behind each journey: where trucks waited, when tipping occurred and which vehicle or tyre conditions needed inspection. Dispatch and maintenance could use the same shift history to decide what to check next.
Warnings about body and tailgate position also reached the driver during operation. The benefit was both a record for supervisors and a prompt for the person able to respond at the truck.
