THE CHALLENGE
Keep parents informed during bus journeys
Parents wanted to know whether their children had boarded the school bus, when they had left it and when the bus was expected to arrive.
The school administration also needed to follow bus movements, review routes and check pickup and drop-off stops.
Recording boarding events had to fit a busy school-bus routine. Children presented their cards in quick succession, so the installation needed to handle closely spaced readings without requiring a long pause between passengers.
THE SOLUTION
Link card events with each bus journey
SMART S-4511 trackers and RFID readers were installed in 20 school buses. Card-reading events were transmitted to the connected monitoring system alongside the bus’s location and journey records.
Record boarding and exit events
Children presented their personal cards when boarding and leaving the bus. The system associated the recorded events with the child’s card, the bus and the time. Parents could check these records to see when their child had boarded or exited. The information depended on children presenting their own cards correctly; it was a record of card use, rather than continuous tracking of the child outside the bus.
Show bus progress and expected arrival
Location updates allowed parents to follow the relevant bus during the journey. The connected system used tracking information to estimate arrival time, helping families prepare for pickup or meet children returning home. The arrival estimate was calculated by the software, not by the tracker alone.
Review school transport operations
School staff could view bus locations and examine route history, stops and recorded boarding events. This gave the administration a way to investigate a parent’s enquiry against a particular bus, time and journey instead of relying only on a telephone account from the driver.
THE RESULT
Journey updates and clearer transport enquiries
Parents gained access to recorded boarding and exit times, together with the location and expected arrival of the relevant bus.
The school administration could review where each bus travelled and stopped, and use the associated card events to follow up on transport enquiries.
WHY SMART S-4511
Handle card events during busy boarding
At a school-bus stop, several children may present their cards within seconds. The project selected S-4511 for its ability to process and transmit closely spaced card events, supporting the boarding routine without requiring children to wait for each previous event to be sent.
- For parents and school staff, the value was a timely record of a specific child’s card being used on a specific bus. Combined with vehicle tracking, this helped answer the practical questions behind the project: has the child boarded, when was their exit recorded, and when is the bus expected to arrive?
