THE CHALLENGE
Understand where fuel went, not just that the tank level fell
A construction contractor used fuel bowsers to refuel excavators, loaders and generators across several project sites.
A drop in the bowser’s tank level did not explain where the fuel went. The company needed to check whether fuel losses coincided with dispensing activity at an expected delivery location.
THE SOLUTION
Match fuel changes with dispensing activity
The company equipped 17 mobile fuel bowsers with SMART S-2425 trackers and wired fuel-level sensors connected through RS-485.
Monitor three separate equipment signals
Three separate inputs monitored vehicle ignition, fuel-pump/PTO activation and dispensing-valve status.
Reviewing delivery activity
The monitoring platform combined location, fuel-level readings and equipment signals. Staff could review the sequence at a delivery stop: arrival, pump activation, opening of the dispensing valve and a reduction in tank level. Together, these records provided evidence consistent with dispensing, rather than treating every stop or fuel-level drop as a delivery.
Investigating unusual events
If the tank level dropped during pump operation at an unexpected location, the supervisor could identify the event and contact the driver. If the pump was activated without a corresponding fuel-level change, staff could check whether dispensing had started, been interrupted or required equipment inspection. Small deliveries also needed to be considered against the fuel sensor’s measurement limits. The valve signal indicated the dispensing valve’s state; it did not independently measure fuel flow. Tank-level changes supported investigation but did not replace a dispensing meter for exact delivered quantities.
RESULTS
Investigate deliveries and fuel losses
Supervisors could check a reported refuelling job against where the bowser stopped and whether dispensing equipment was used.
A tank-level reduction outside the expected sequence gave staff a specific event to investigate with the driver or site supervisor, while exact delivered quantities still required a dispensing meter.
WHY SMART S-2425
Check fuel drops against deliveries
S-2425 helped the contractor separate a reported refuelling job from an unexplained tank-level reduction. Supervisors could examine where the bowser stopped and whether the pump and valve were used at that time.
That gave the site team a concrete delivery or loss event to investigate. It strengthened accountability for the carried diesel without treating a tank-level estimate as an exact dispensing measurement.
