THE CHALLENGE
Detect a rise from the project’s −18°C setting
A frozen-food distributor operated 34 refrigerated vehicles in Astana. The project’s normal transport temperature was −18°C.
The company needed to know promptly when temperature began to rise, so staff could contact the driver and request a check during the delivery. Monitoring the whole fleet manually made it difficult to identify which vehicle needed attention.
THE SOLUTION
Alert at −17°C using individual readings
SMART S-2421 trackers were installed in all 34 vehicles. Each refrigerated compartment had two wired temperature sensors connected through 1-Wire. Alerts were configured through the device’s standard settings, without Complex Events.
Notify the operator at −17°C
If either sensor reported a temperature reaching −17°C, the tracker sent an urgent SMS notification to the operator. This was a one-degree rise from the project’s normal temperature of −18°C. The alert used individual sensor readings, so a deviation at one monitored point could trigger a notification without being averaged with the other reading. The threshold was a setting for this project, rather than a universal limit for all frozen products.
Direct attention to the affected delivery
The notification allowed the operator to identify the vehicle requiring attention and contact its driver. Staff could request a check of the refrigeration unit and cargo-compartment conditions, then determine the next action from the findings. The temperature alert identified a condition requiring investigation; it did not automatically establish equipment failure or product damage.
THE RESULT
A consistent alert process across 34 vehicles
The distributor gained a consistent alert process across 34 vehicles. Operators could focus on deliveries where a monitored temperature reached −17°C instead of continuously checking every vehicle’s readings.
This provided an opportunity to investigate a developing temperature problem while the shipment was still in transit.
WHY SMART S-2421
Focus on deliveries needing early attention
S-2421 helped the supplier identify which delivery needed attention as soon as a monitored temperature reached the configured warning level. With 34 vehicles on the road, staff could direct their response to a specific truck rather than rely on routine calls or continuous manual checks.
For the business, the value was the opportunity to act before a temperature deviation continued unnoticed. Timely investigation could help limit deterioration of frozen products, rejected deliveries and replacement costs, without requiring a custom control program for the alert.
