THE CHALLENGE
Know when a deviation starts and ends
A dairy distributor operated 12 refrigerated trucks with ageing refrigeration units. Equipment failures created a risk of rising cargo temperatures during deliveries.
The supplier needed to know when a monitored area became too warm and when its temperature returned to the configured range. Staff could then follow up during the journey instead of discovering a problem only at delivery.
THE SOLUTION
Monitor each sensor and report recovery
SMART S-2421 trackers were installed in all 12 trucks. Four wired temperature sensors were connected through 1-Wire in each refrigerated compartment. Temperature notifications were configured using the device’s standard settings, without Complex Events.
Detect a deviation at an individual sensor
When any connected sensor reported a temperature above 5°C, the tracker sent an SMS notification to the responsible employee. The rule monitored individual readings rather than their average. A warmer reading at one sensor could therefore trigger an alert even if the other three remained below the threshold. Staff could contact the driver and request a check of the refrigeration equipment and cargo-compartment conditions.
Receive confirmation of temperature recovery
The device sent a further SMS when the affected sensor returned to the configured normal range. This helped staff follow the event through to recovery instead of relying only on the initial warning. If a recovery message had not arrived, they had a reason to follow up with the driver. A recovery notification confirmed the temperature reading had returned to range; it did not independently establish the condition of the dairy products.
THE RESULT
Notifications from deviation to recovery
The supplier gained notifications covering both the start and end of a temperature deviation across its 12 trucks.
Staff could direct attention to an affected vehicle, request a check and see whether the monitored temperature subsequently recovered. This reduced the need to repeatedly request temperature updates from drivers or continuously watch readings.
WHY SMART S-2421
Follow exceptions without a custom program
S-2421 gave the supplier a practical way to manage temperature exceptions across a larger fleet. Staff knew which delivery needed attention and received a follow-up when the affected reading recovered, helping them distinguish an ongoing problem from one that had returned to the configured range.
For a distributor using ageing refrigeration equipment, that meant an opportunity to intervene during transport. Earlier attention could help limit spoilage, rejected deliveries and replacement costs. The required warning-and-recovery process was achieved through standard device settings, without a custom control program.
