Food Delivery Temperature and Fuel Checks in India

A food logistics company in Maharashtra used Navtelecom SMART S-2433 to identify temperature deviations earlier, investigate fuel losses and improve driving standards.

THE CHALLENGE

Turn temperature and fuel exceptions into specific actions

Temperature deviations during refrigerated deliveries were being noticed too late. The operator needed to identify changes while a truck was still on its journey, giving staff time to contact the driver and check the refrigeration system.

Fuel losses were also difficult to explain. The company needed to verify refuelling, investigate unexpected drops in tank level and understand how consumption varied with distance and operating conditions. It also wanted to assess whether driving habits and prolonged engine idling contributed to higher fuel use.

THE SOLUTION

Link cargo, fuel and driving to each trip

The initial deployment equipped 4 Ashok Leyland refrigerated trucks with SMART S-2433 trackers. SMART S-2433 connected vehicle tracking, fuel monitoring, refrigerated-compartment temperature readings and driver identification to a fleet management platform.

Detect temperature deviations during the journey

Two Bluetooth temperature sensors were installed inside the refrigerated compartment. Their readings gave the operator temperature information from two locations in the load space throughout the recorded journey. The platform’s configured temperature limits and notifications helped staff identify deviations and contact the driver to check the refrigeration system and transport conditions. This gave the company an opportunity to intervene while the delivery was underway, rather than discovering the issue only afterwards. The readings supported cargo-condition checks at the sensor locations; they did not replace inspection of the products themselves.

Check refuelling and fuel losses

A wired fuel level sensor connected through RS-485 recorded changes in the tank. The platform associated these readings with the truck’s location and journey history. The operator could review refuelling events and investigate unexpected fuel drops against the circumstances of a stop. This made it easier to distinguish normal fuel use from discrepancies requiring attention. Fuel records and tracked distance also helped the company build consumption benchmarks for individual vehicles. Comparing similar journeys gave managers a practical basis for investigating unusually high consumption instead of applying one fuel target to every operating condition.

Review idling and driving behaviour

Engine RPM, vehicle movement and ignition records helped identify stationary periods with the engine running. Supervisors could review these periods to distinguish necessary operation from avoidable idling. Eco-driving recorded harsh acceleration, braking and manoeuvres for review. The company used these events to discuss specific habits with drivers and compare fuel performance on similar work. A cab buzzer provided immediate feedback when speed exceeded the configured 70 km/h threshold. Configured through the standard Eco-driving settings, the warning remained active until speed returned within the threshold.

Link each journey to an authorised driver

Drivers presented an iButton key to the identification reader connected through 1-Wire. Successful authorisation enabled engine starting through a relay. This linked journeys and driving events to the responsible driver. The company could follow up on incidents with the right person and use individual driving records in its assessment process.

CUSTOMER-REPORTED OUTCOMES

Better delivery and fuel oversight

The customer reported earlier temperature checks, stronger fuel accountability and improved driving quality.

Staff could contact drivers about temperature excursions during delivery and investigate refuelling or unexpected losses against trip records. Vehicle-specific fuel benchmarks and driver rankings gave supervisors a basis for coaching and comparison. According to the customer, fuel monitoring also helped prevent unauthorised draining.

WHY SMART S-2433

Respond in transit and review driver records

S-2433 gave the distributor a way to contact the responsible driver while a temperature problem could still be checked. Fuel and driving records also let supervisors build vehicle-specific comparisons and discuss particular driving events.

The company could therefore address cargo conditions during the trip and follow up on fuel use and driving habits afterwards, using evidence from the same delivery.
