THE CHALLENGE
Know who is registered, how they drive and when a changeover is due
An intercity bus operator launched a pilot to address driving habits that increased fuel consumption, monitor driver seat-belt use and improve driver changeovers on long journeys.
Each bus had two drivers. The company needed to know which driver was registered, how they drove and when they needed to hand over to their colleague.
THE SOLUTION
Link drivers to coaching and changeover alerts
The company installed SMART S-4511 trackers, driver-identification readers and in-cabin buzzers on 10 buses. The installation combined Eco Driving, seat-belt monitoring and a changeover reminder configured through Complex Events.
Identifying the driver
Before starting their shift, each driver registered a personal card. At changeover, the outgoing driver removed their card and the replacement driver presented theirs. This allowed trip records and driving events to be associated with the registered driver.
Monitoring driving behaviour and seat-belt use
Eco Driving recorded configured events, including harsh acceleration and braking. The installation also monitored whether the driver’s seat belt was fastened. The company could review specific incidents with the relevant driver, addressing both inefficient driving habits and seat-belt use while the bus was moving. This provided a practical basis for coaching smoother driving and checking safety-rule compliance.
Reminding the crew to change drivers
A Complex Events program tracked the registered driver’s shift against the company’s 8-hour maximum. When the shift exceeded eight hours, the buzzer sounded continuously to remind the crew that a changeover was due. After handing over, the drivers were required to update the registered card. The warning did not shut down the engine. Accurate records depended on drivers using their own cards correctly. Registering another card did not independently verify that a different person had taken the wheel.
PILOT RESULTS
Driver-linked events and changeover reminders
During the ongoing 10-bus pilot, staff can review harsh acceleration, braking and seat-belt events with the registered driver.
Crews receive a continuous reminder when a registered shift exceeds eight hours. The pilot establishes a process for targeted coaching and changeover reminders; fuel savings have not yet been measured.
WHY SMART S-4511
Target coaching and prompt driver changeovers
S-4511 gave the operator something a bus location alone could not provide: a basis for discussing a driving incident with the registered driver. The company could focus coaching on the acceleration, braking and seat-belt events that needed attention.
It also brought the company’s eight-hour changeover rule into the cab. The crew received a reminder without waiting for a dispatcher to notice an overdue shift and call. The pilot is testing whether these changes translate into lower fuel use.
